  • Car Batteries
  • Building Materials such as
    • Boards, Doors, or Plywood
    • Sheet Rock
    • Asphalt Shingles

IF ANY OF THESE ITEMS ARE FOUND IN YOUR CONTAINER IT WILL NOT BE DUMPED THAT DAY AND AN ADDITIONAL CHARGE OF $20.00 COULD BE ADDED TO YOUR BILL TO COME BACK AND DUMP THE CONTAINER AFTER THE MATERIALS ARE REMOVED.

Your container also cannot be dumped if the truck cannot access the container. If cars block the access or if garbage, tree limbs, snow, or other materials prohibit access to the container it cannot be dumped. An extra charge will generally be assessed to cover the return trip. Cars or similar obstructions should be at least 10 ft from the dumpster.

The residential sanitation truck begins its route at 7:00 a.m. Please have your containers out by this time to avoid being missed. Commercial routes begin at 5:00 a.m. Please set containers at least 3 feet apart and not under trees, wires, etc.

Extra Charges

Business or home owners will be chared $30 to $80 per hour for the special handling of any of the above items found in city handled containers, depending upon the men and equipment needed, plus any charges for damage to the city truck. Special arrangements can be made to collect restricted or oversized items. There will be additional charges for handling and disposing of these materials. Call City Hall for arrangements and costs. Any situation where the sanitation truck must return later, apart from its regualr route, to empty a container, the business or homeowner will be charged an additional $20 to return a second time for pickup. The city will attempt to notify the residence or business by phone. If contact with the owner cannot be made, the container will not be emptied.

Fines for Unauthorized Use of Bins

The City Council has set a $300 fine for unauthorized dumping of garbage in someone else’s container. If a person is convicted a reward of $100 goes to the person who identifies the person responsible, $100 to the owner of the container, and $100 to the city. Any papers found in the containers with names on them can be used as evidence.

Garbage on the Ground

Please do not attempt to overfill your container. The sanitation driver is instructed to not leave the cab of the truck to handle any garbage on the ground, including that which falls while emptying the container. To minimize garbage spilling from the container during dumping, please put loose papers in plastic bags or put them down deeper in the container. If they are loosely placed on the top, the wind will often blow them out while dumping. If you need your garbage to be picked up more often, please contact City Hall. Do not fill containers beyond where the lid will not close less than 45ْ angle.

Free Spring and Fall Yard Waste Cleanup

The city will haul for free (using dump trucks) yard waste during its free spring and fall cleanup. The dates will be set each year by the city council. Any hauling after the posted dates will be charged $30 to $80 per hour, depending on what equipment is required. Brush or limbs must be bundled and in four foot or less lengths. Also, any hauling requiring a backhoe or loader will be charged at applicable rates. Collection of yard waste will be done on the same day as your scheduled residential collection. The yard cleanup items should not be included with your regular garbage pickup. The free collection is for yard waste only, not for previously listed items.

County Transfer Station

Many of the larger items can be taken to the Madison County transfer station that is located at 750 N Airport Rd. The transfer station will accept washers, dryers, stoves, refrigerators, water heaters, old tires, auto batteries, and similar items at minimal costs. Items such as card board, aluminum cans, newsprint, steel, and similar items are accepted at no charge. Yard wastes, dead animals, construction material, and similar large wastes can be taken to the Madison County Construction/Demolition site located west of the city by the Menan Buttes. Contact the county waste transfer station for exact costs and other questions at 356-3102.
