The City of Rexburg Teton Flood Museum (including the Rexburg
Children’s Museum) is located in the basement of the historic
Tabernacle on Center Street. The purpose of the Museum is to
tell the story of Rexburg and the surrounding areas, of which the
June 5, 1976 flood (and its aftermath) is a significant and
component part. The story is rich, diverse, and multifaceted.
To honor the past, the Museum displays many one-of-a-kind artifacts
from the first 125 years of this community (which was settled in
1883). From the first settlers who pioneered life in a forbidding
environment to those who rebuilt the city after the devastating flood,
the citizens of Rexburg have long exhibited the traits of industry,
hard work, faith, resourcefulness, heartiness, and determination.
To reach out to the future, the Museum has added an interactive children’s exhibit.
The old-fashioned one-room schoolhouse will contain a number of hands-on displays
and activities targeted at children under the age of 12. It features the wooden
floor and wainscoting from the Japanese Language School, a reading loft, books by
Idaho authors, costumes, a small gift shop, and supervised activities and demonstrations.
The first month's theme will be "Back to School", and it will focus on the first
schools in this community, including Ricks Academy and Toai Gakuen (the Japanese
Language School). The exibit for March will be "Around the World", and April
will focus on "Dinosaurs and Fossils".
The exhibits have been made possible through grants, donations, and
loans. The Museum welcomes continued support and contributions.
