City Ordinances

Ordinances

An Ordinance is a law passed by a municipal government. Ordinances constitute the subject matter of municipal law. The City of Rexburg’s power to enact ordinances is derived from the statutes of the state of Idaho. Ordinances deal with and maintain public safety, health, morals, and general welfare.

Examples of when to use an ordinance:

  • to regulate people (e.g. disturbing the peace)
  • to regulate property (e.g. zoning)
  • to grant franchises
  • to authorize bond issues
  • to adopt the annual appropriation
  • to adopt a records retention schedule

Resolutions

Resolutions are official decisions made by the City Council to do or not do something.  They are also used for internal or administrative purposes.

Municipal Code

The Municipal Code is a systematic arrangement of the City's local legislation by subject matter.  It's a codification of the ordinances and resolutions.  It removes repealed or obsolete ordinances and formats the current code into user-friendly titles, chapter and sections.
