We're Calling it Flood 50
On June 5, 1976, 80 billion gallons of water burst through the Teton Dam upon its initial filling. The dam, located 15 miles NE of Rexburg, and its failure unleashed a torrent that swept across the Snake River Plain.
For three days, the floodwaters surged through towns and farmland, traveling over 100 miles until finally ceasing at the American Falls Dam. The disaster claimed 11 lives and left a trail of destruction, upending homes, businesses, land, livestock, and entire communities.
Yet in the face of unimaginable destruction, people far and wide responded with extraordinary courage, compassion, and resilience. Neighbors helped neighbors, coming together to rebuild what had been lost and to lift each other in a time of tragedy.
In its wake, the dedicated rebuilding efforts of so many left relatively few signs of the devastation downstream, but inspiring actions and life-changing experiences remain, and our community is ever changed and continually fortified as a result.
This year, Rexburg and the surrounding areas are recognizing the event with a weeklong commemoration. The dam thing has been dubbed Flood 50. A week-long series of events taking place from June 1st to 6th, 2026.
This is not a celebration of disaster; this is a commemoration of community and recognition of the dedicated effort that shaped our region.
We invite the community, the surrounding area, the region, and the world to reflect and participate with us with opportunities to Remember, Connect, and Serve.
Please visit our website at TetonFlood50.org to learn more and participate in this once-in-a-lifetime event.
